Summer Leadership INSTITUTE

MASFAA is committed to helping both members and nonmembers develop professionally. There is a storied history of providing two training opportunities with the annual Summer Institute and Leadership Symposium programs. Each program aligns with MASFAA's strategic mission to provide timely and cost effective training to implement new regulations, follow best practices in the financial aid profession and develop leaders.

No problem, you can still register for the MASFAA Summer Institute or Leadership Symposium and receive a complimentary membership for the remainder of the 2016-17 member year.

WHAT IS MAFSAA's SUMMER INSTITUTE?

When: 

June 5-9, 2017

Where: 

Illinois State University (Normal, IL)

What: 

Summer Institute will drill home the basic financial aid concepts and participants will come away with a solid foundation of the information they need to go back and best serve their students and institutions.

Using the NASFAA University Boot Camp training materials, graduates of Summer Institute will come away with confidence, and their toolbox will be filled with knowledge and resources. As part of the registration fee:

Students will receive NASFAA-approved curriculum materials to help guide them and be a resource for the classroom sessions,

The opportunity to test for 11 NASFAA credentials. They will have 40 days after Summer Institute to complete any of the 11 NASFAA credential tests, and

Participate in networking activities and cross-over sessions with the MASFAA Board and Leadership Symposium to learn more about MASFAA and build their professional network.

A complimentary 2016-17 MASFAA Membership.

WHAT IS MASFSAA's LEADERSHIP SYMPOSIUM?

What: 

The MASFAA Leadership Symposium is meant to build on leadership skills you may have already have learned and help participants hone in on bigger picture issues they may face back at their office or while holding leadership positions within the financial aid associations.

We have experienced financial aid professionals to help you nail down the things you need to know and build your confidence so you can have an impact.

Sessions will push participants to think about things from different vantage points, learn more about themselves, building and leading a team, managing up and more.

As part of your registration rates, you will also receive a complimentary 2016-17 MASFAA Membership.

WHAT TO BRING

Summer Institute attendees will be provided with an electronic copy of the NASFAA University Study Guides and Presentations for all the topics covered in the curriculum prior to the event. Participants may wish to bring an electronic version or hard copy of the materials, along with pens, paper, laptop, and/or iPad to take notes. Hard copy materials will not be provided.

Leadership Symposium attendees will be provided with an electronic copy of the MASFAA Leadership Symposium materials prior to the event. You may wish to bring an electronic version or hard copy of the materials, along with pens, paper, laptop, and/or iPad to take notes. Hard copy materials will not be provided.

Bring your business cards for networking!

You will be walking from the residence halls to the meeting rooms. You may wish to bring an umbrella.

*Also, be sure to read the section below on housing and meals. We STRONGLY encourage you to also bring your own twin bed fitted sheet, flat sheet, a blanket, pillow, and pillow case. The standard dorm sheets that are provided are very thin and we want you to make sure you are as comfortable as possible. We also suggest that you bring your own bath towel and wash cloth for your comfort.


WHAT TO WEAR

Attendees should dress casually for comfort during training and may wish to bring a sweater. Tuesday evening's activity will be an outdoor event, so attendees should plan accordingly.
  • Tuesday is night at the ballpark, so feel free to wear your favorite baseball or sporting team's attire during the day!
  • Thursday is school spirit day, so please wear your school attire!
  • Comfortable walking shoes.


HOUSING AND MEALS

Attendees will be housed in the Illinois State University residence hall system. Basic bed linens* and towels will be provided, however, you may wish to bring these additional items:

  • Towels
  • Pillows
  • Blankets
  • Toiletries, such as shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shower shoes, etc. (none will be provided)

*We STRONGLY encourage you to also bring your own twin bed fitted sheet, flat sheet, a blanket, pillow, and pillow case. Meals will be provided by the Illinois State University Dining System, with the exception of Tuesday evening's meal at the Normal Cornbelters' ballpark, and Thursday evening's meal, which will be on your own.

Alcohol is not allowed in the residence halls of Illinois State University.

Attendees arriving prior to June 5th may not stay in the Illinois State University residence halls. Participants who arrive prior to June 5th may wish to stay in one of the following downtown Normal hotels at their own expense. If a participant wishes to stay in a hotel throughout the entire week they may book separate arrangements on their own and at their own expense. Summer Institute or Leadership Symposium costs will not be reduced if a participant decides to stay in a hotel instead.

LOCATION AND TRAVEL 

Institute and Leadership Symposium will take place in Normal, IL, on the campus of Illinois State University. Training and meals will occur in the Bone Student Center, 200 N. University Street, Normal IL 61761.

Attendees may choose to fly to Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington, IL, which is about six miles from the Illinois State University campus.


ACTIVITIES

Attendees will participate in group activities on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Tuesday evening will see the group attend a Normal Cornbelters baseball game. Thursday evening will be dinner on your own, however, group dining options led by Summer Institute faculty will be available.
